We had 5 days of holiday and we wanted to go diving. After a lengthy period of time of staring at the map, we decided to go to Pulau Weh, which is a great destination for diving. There is also a direct flight from Penang to Banda Aceh from where the ferry goes to the island. The ferry trip was quite amusing – laying on the top deck surrounded by families and kids (photo below) 🙂 . We were staying at Freddies Santai Sumurtiga, a beautiful tranquil spot, relaxing bungalow with a sea view and you could walk a couple of feet into the water and see vibrantly coloured tropical fish. There was a platform out in the water and I would sit on it and watch the colourful fish swimming under the aqua water, it was so crystal clear.
WHERE TO FIND FREDDIES SANTAI SUMURTIGA
Freddies is located at Sumur Tiga beach, about 20 minutes away north east of the island. To get there we rented a bike at the ferry terminal once we arrived at Pulau Weh. I turned on Google maps and we followed the directions given to us. The map said Freddies is on the ocean side of the road, however, we couldn’t find any sign. We passed by the entrance like 4 times when we noticed their sign on the other side of the road. So keep looking that way to find it faster than us 🙂
GROUNDS
Breathtaking. That was the first word that came to mind when we entered the grounds of this resort.
All the rooms, the reception, the dining area and other buildings at Freddies are built on a cliff right down to the beach, overlooking the Malacca Strait. Everything in this resort is made of wood, which gives the tropical island paradise feel, what Pulau Weh really is.
ACCOMMODATION
The room – very cozy, relaxing, basic shower with hot water, balcony facing the turquoise blue sea, a hammock to sway you away in your daydreams, the sea breeze blowing into the room, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore and the sheer white curtains simply add to the whole feeling.
In the morning, we could see the sunrise at our doorstep. It was really beautiful, and we enjoyed it every single day while we were there. It was really easy to wake up early since there is not much to do in the evenings and we went to sleep soon after the sunset.
The only problem we had was no good fan in our room. There was only a small table fan which was not strong enough.
FOOD
Many people come to Freddies Santai Sumurtiga only to eat and I’m not surprised – the food is delicious! We were here only for two days, however, we fell in love with their pizza. We ordered it at least three times and had it at the restaurant by the beach. Look at that blue water! It’s amazingly beautiful!
Nice buffet breakfast and beautiful sunrise were what we got the last morning before we had to leave to Banda Aceh.
WHAT TO DO
If you came here to scuba dive, you are at the right place! Ask at the reception and they will arrange a diving day trip for you together with transportation there and back – because you don’t want to worry about anything during your holiday, right?
We rented a bike and we drove around to explore the island. If you want to get inspired what to do there, I wrote a list of things I liked and you can read it here.
Staying at Freddies Santai Sumurtiga was simply a blast. I enjoyed every moment of it.
Thank you, Freddie and your team for being so helpful and thank you for all your kindness. I hope to be back one day.
