So I guess like me you don’t know anything about Songkran? Well last month I was able to see for myself what it feels like.
Songkran is a celebration of Thai New Year. Penang is close to a border with Thailand and there is a Thai Buddhist temple right behind our house. This year the celebration was on the same day as our Czech Easter. But instead of eggs I got splashed many times with water. And that’s why this celebration is also known as the water festival.
Once we got through the temple gates, others surrounded us and started to splash us with very cold water . But in this weather I didn’t mind at all, actually it was quite refreshing! After a while I borrowed a water gun and later got my own plastic bottle. We were running among people, splashing water everywhere and screaming Happy New Year!! We had so much fun. Just at the end some kind people mixed red colouring into the water and they were not bothered that I’m blond or that my hair would turn pink colour :)) Luckily we were able to partly wash it out from our hair and clothes. Anyway we ran home to wash it all out and still we were pink for another three days :))
Thai New Year celebration is my favourite now! 🙂 Look at my video – sorry for the water drops on my camera, we couldn’t avoid it. :))
